La Fiscalía imputó el delito de maltrato animal a Guillermo Caro Guerrero, el propietario de un criadero de perros en Guaduas (Cundinamarca), señalado de mantener en precarias condiciones a varios de los animales que tenía a su cuidado y protección.
Entre marzo de 2019 y febrero de 2021, este hombre habría dejado de velar por la correcta alimentación, salubridad y bienestar de los caninos. En varias visitas las autoridades ambientales constataron que los perros de diferentes razas permanecían en hacinamiento y espacios sucios; tenían garrapatas, pulgas y heridas en diferentes partes del cuerpo; y presentaban cuadros clínicos diversos acompañados de otitis, orina oscura, respiración acelerada y taquicardia, entre otros síntomas.
Adicionalmente, en las inspecciones se estableció que la comida estaba descompuesta, los recipientes tenían agua contaminada, y no existían registro de ingreso de los animales ni plan de vacunas, entre otras falencias. En febrero de 2021, fueron rescatados 21 perros. A 13 les fueron diagnosticados problemas de salud y desnutrición, y uno de ellos murió.

El pasado 31 de marzo, tras una denuncia de la ciudadanía, autoridades ambientales acudieron al inmueble y encontraron al animal con dificultad para levantarse, sin agua y comida.
El perro fue rescatado para su atención veterinaria. Los especialista detectaron un cuadro severo de desnutrición, dificultad respiratoria y dolor abdominal. Ante la gravedad del estado el canino murió de un paro respiratorio.
